I will post some small ( 5 x 7 ) sketches. The first sketch is of a bus driver and passenger. The next is more passengers. The 3rd sketch is a kichenette area in my hotel room. Of course the last sketch is someone's feet.  These pertain to my trip to NY many years ago.

Memories flooded me last night. I opened up a portfolio that had  high school pieces in it. I'll put them up. There is a pencil sketch and one painting that I think I didn't even gesso the cloth. I don't think I knew to do that, then. One sketch puts a date on life because of the style of telephone and the saddle oxfords. Much of the lead has rubbed off the drawings also.

Remember .... COLLEGE HILL COFFEE CO.

Saturday, February 26, 2011

Take note: all that are looking at this from the Cincinnati area, be aware that  COLLEGE HILL COFFEE CO  is selling some of my tiles. It's located on the corner of Hamilton and North Bend Rd. There's parking in the back. They have great coffee and eats.  Make sure you stop in there!
Check out their website !

Tonight's art is a wood carving I did in 1966. It's the only wood carving I have left. I carved it on the roof of a hotel I was staying in for several months. I forgot to clean my wood chips up and when it rained the chips clogged the drain spout. I heard it from the maintenance man. Anyway, it's stained pine and I think I only had about 2 chisels. The carving itself is about 24 inches tall.

Back to a couple of bobbles til I can get my head cleared up about a kiln that didn't fire correctly.  Maybe a bad coil. These beads are 2 inch or + in diameter and can be hung anywhere. However, they weigh too much for a fan cord.

An unfired tile and an unfired clay tablet.  That is their state of being in these photos. Over night I fired them ( bisque ). The tile was one of the last pulled from a mold.... which broke.  I have made a new mold but it is 'curing'. The clay tablet is an experiment.  Happy Birthday mom, where ever you are.

Today's post is a 'clay tablet' or 2.  They are not fired yet.... however, they are in the kiln as I write, bisqueing in the heat. Each of these is 'one of a kind' and you can find the sketch I went from on one of the older posts.

More small tiles. The dishes contain ceramic beads that I make from clay that I screed from the tiles, when they are pressed. Eventually, I hope to glaze them. I try to put similar sizes together in cups.

Continuing with the cat tile you see a dry unfired cat tile in the first photo.  By the way, the black mark on the mold is to orient me as to where the TOP of the mold is.  The next cat tile is a translucent glazed tile and the next tile is also a glazed tile. Then there is the photo of multiple cat tiles. These tiles are approximately 4 inch square each.

This post deals with my cat face tile. What you are seeing is the plaster mold I press the clay into to get the tile. You are also seeing an optical illusion because it looks as if the cat's square is popping out of the circle and it is NOT. It is totally recessed. I will continue this in the next post.

Here's a week's worth ( 7 ) in a day. These are bothering me. I think I've found one of the noses I draw on  a detective in a series I'm watching.

Another 'clay tablet'. We have quite a few 'models' for this tablet.

Another 'tablet'.  I think this is the first time I did eyes this way. new filters. ha!

Another clay tablet. I wish I could make the color better. This tablet has brown clay slip atop a white clay tablet. There are bits of porcelain atop all and I've used some yellow underglaze on the flowers.

Sorry for not posting yesterday. My Valentines day will long be remembered as a major plumbing debacle, flooding under the kitchen sink and down to the basement.  Today is another day and water is running properly ( inside pipe lines ).  So the first image is a small watercolor, which I don't remember the year it was done.  The next image is one of my clay tablets done in the past 2 weeks. Sorry for the yellow color on the 'tablet' ( my photography ). It is really white.

Another pastel, however, kiln report is good. Maybe a little clay next week.

Another pastel. May do a glaze firing today. Next week looks promising for clay.

Another pastel.  I'm firing the kiln this week, so, maybe something different next week. Sorry about the photography on these. They are a tad brighter than what you see. That's really supposed to be a white on there.

I'll be posting some abstract pastels on paper that were done in the early 80s this week coming up.

Paintings done in '63 when I was in art school. The grouping of subject was done on a canvas. The other was on masonite.

Thursday, February 3, 2011

I did these in the 80s, I think. They are paint on paper.... and I would love to do more of these. I'm no longer their 'keeper', someone else has them.
